Sunday Art Dialogue: The Song of the Open Road | Walt Whitman

I have just returned to Bath after a wonderful journey through Spain with a surprise visit from my son Benjamin Maggs— a journey that coincided with my birthday and reminded me, once again, of the extraordinary richness of simply being alive.

There is something about travelling that opens us up. We step away from our familiar streets and routines and suddenly find ourselves meeting new people, seeing differently, listening more carefully. A conversation over tapas, a chance encounter in a gallery, a filmmaker's perspective, a work of art that stops you in your tracks - these seemingly small moments become part of the journey.

Walt Whitman is one of my favourite poets and Whitman's Song of the Open Road has been on my mind since returning. It is not simply a poem about travelling from one place to another. It is about possibility - about remaining curious, moving forward, and being open to the people and experiences that meet us along the way.

Spain gave me all of that: art, colour, food, friendship, architecture, conversation, laughter and the wonderful energy of people celebrating life together.

And now l am back in Bath.

So time to begin working again - with renewed energy and a sense of purpose. There are artists to champion, conversations to have, exhibitions to explore and new ideas to bring to life. So look for news about upcoming events, new gallery artists and more.

Perhaps every journey is ultimately a journey back to ourselves, carrying with us the people we have met and the things we have seen.

As Whitman writes:

"Let the paper remain on the desk unwritten, and the book on the shelf unopened!"

There is a whole open road ahead.
