I'm a multi-disciplinary artist working in painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, photography and sculpture.

 

I am an academician at the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) and the President of the Bath Society of Artists.  

 

The landscape painting thread of my practice has grown from the landscape of the West of England, not directly observed but processed through small brief drawings and memory. I’ve felt a deep connection with the rural landscape from an early age. 

 

The urban landscape, though of great interest, failed to find a way into my painting until my time at Bath Artist’s Studios and the proximity of my studio to the redevelopment of the riverside. The disturbing noise of construction gradually turned into inspiration as the architectural shapes began to emerge. The square and the cube became important additions to my visual vocabulary. 

 

I use both oils and acrylics either on canvas or wooden panels. I find the panels more interesting as a support, they allow for a more vigorous approach, sanding back areas or scratching into the paint. 

 

Drawing has always been important either as a starting point or a finished work. Observational drawing is vital to keep sharp and I’ve found more and more that drawing without a plan or an outcome in mind has become very important to me. 

 

I’ve always made 3 dimensional work, from pre school years upwards. Often and certainly recently this work starts from donated materials, creative recycling is appealing. This has not been part of my mainstream practice so there’s less pressure. With no destination in mind the work could go in any direction and it has. I do see how it links to my painting and drawing, it has a wonderful recklessness about it that excites me.
